Rio Tinto announces start of iron ore rail cars production with Gemco

Metals and mining firm Rio Tinto has introduced the beginning of manufacturing of its first iron ore rail automobiles in-built Western Australia (WA).

The corporate is investing A$150m ($94.8m) to obtain 100 rail automobiles as a part of its operations within the Pilbara area. This growth is anticipated to create as much as 25 jobs in Pilbara.

The brand new automobiles are being produced collaboration with Gemco Rail and CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Inventory, with help from the WA authorities to determine an area provide chain and help manufacturing within the area.

The primary batch of 40 rail automobiles is being produced at Gemco’s facility in Forrestfield, Perth.

A further LMIF grant of A$340,929 ($215,512) has been invested in modernising tools at Forrestfield, which has additionally received a contract to provide 40 rail wagons to BHP.

The LMIF has invested greater than $13.5m ($8.5m) into native manufacturing initiatives.

Gemco Rail plans to make use of superior engineering and robotic welding applied sciences to supply rail automobiles able to transporting as much as 118 tonnes of iron ore from Rio Tinto’s 17 mines to its ports.

The Karratha workshop may also provide new and refurbished rail automotive bearings regionally, lowering the necessity to transport these parts from Perth.

The primary regionally manufactured rail automobiles are anticipated to enter service within the Pilbara within the first half of 2025.

Rio Tinto Iron Ore chief government Simon Trott mentioned: “By partnering with Gemco Rail and CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Inventory, we’re establishing new manufacturing functionality within the Pilbara that may create a dependable and sustainable provide chain to help our operations and the regional economic system for years to return.”

Rio Tinto operates about 13,500 iron ore rail automobiles and replaces round ten retired automobiles annually.

In 2022, Hitachi Rail commissioned an autonomous transport system for the Gudai-Darri iron ore mine, connecting it to Rio Tinto’s AutoHaul community through a 166km rail spur.
