Unemployment rate in India climbs to 5.6% in May 2025

India’s unemployment charge elevated to five.6 per cent in Could 2025, up from 5.1 per cent in April, based on the newest Periodic Labour Pressure Survey (PLFS) launched by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Monday.

The rise in unemployment was noticed throughout each rural and concrete areas, with youth unemployment reaching 13.7 per cent in rural areas and 17.9 per cent in city facilities.

The Labour Pressure Participation Charge (LFPR), which measures the proportion of individuals aged 15 and above who’re both working or actively in search of work, stood at 54.8 per cent in Could, a decline from 55.6 per cent in April.

The Employee Inhabitants Ratio (WPR), indicating the proportion of employed people among the many working-age inhabitants, additionally slipped month-on-month. In Could 2025, the WPR in rural areas for individuals aged 15 and above was 54.1 per cent, whereas in city areas, it stood at 46.9 per cent. The general WPR declined to 51.7 per cent in Could from 52.8 per cent in April.

The rise in unemployment is essentially attributed to seasonal elements, significantly the tip of the Rabi harvest season, which generally results in a brief discount in agricultural jobs for each women and men.
