D.C. cannabis regulator shutters another unlicensed retailer amid crackdown

Washington D.C. regulators and regulation enforcement closed an unlawful hashish retailer and consumption venue amid a citywide crackdown on unlicensed operators.

In response to WUSA-TV, a CBS affiliate within the District, the Alcoholic Beverage and Hashish Administration (ABCA) and the Metropolitan Police Division shuttered and padlocked Smoke and Cigar Lounge in Georgetown.

After acquiring a search warrant, investigators recovered quite a few illicit and unregulated merchandise, together with:

Over 9 kilos of flower and THC edibles every.
Greater than eight kilos of mushroom edibles and roughly 116 grams of mushrooms.
325 grams of THC resin and over 700 grams of THC wax.

Enterprise house owners face a person $10,000 effective and should submit a remediation plan to stop unlawful hashish gross sales to regain entry to the shop, the information station reported.

Up to now, regulators have shut down 42 retailers that didn’t apply for medical marijuana licenses.

Lots of of so-called “gifting retailers” had two years to use to fulfill the March 31 deadline or face closure, MJBizDaily reported final week.

Solely seven MMJ dispensaries and eight cultivators have been licensed in D.C. after the district legalized MMJ in Could 2010 although a whole bunch of gifting retailers opened after voters authorized a poll initiative in 2014 that allowed shops promoting non-marijuana gadgets to incorporate a “present” of hashish.

The most recent enforcement ramp-up was approved by an emergency modification enacted in July 2024 that granted ABCA new civil enforcement powers, together with issuing warnings, fines, and cease-and-desist orders to people who failed to use for MMJ licenses.

As a result of the U.S. Congress oversees the federal government of Washington, D.C., native authorities are prevented from regulating hashish gross sales as different jurisdictions.
